When Norman Clyde started climbing in the Sierra Nevada, trails and roads were few. Getting to the mountains was almost as challenging as climbing them. The infrastructure of today’s Sierra Nevada simply didn’t exist. Clyde lived in an abandoned ranch house, and walked from Big Pine to most of the summits of the peaks he climbed.
